Players Should have Opportunities to Play.

I have read an article which talk about a game named <大乱闘スマッシュブラザーズ>, the English name is : Super Smash Bros.,Somebodies call it as "Smash Brothers". In this article, the writer mentioned the designers set up some principles, one of them is that players should have the opportunities to play.

It seems a kind of nonsense. Players, of course, should play in the game. However, most of the designers have not to pay much more attention to this point. For example, the common mechanic is that when a character be beaten with a combo attack, they have nothing to do except just watching the visual lighting on their character's body and their health bar become shorter. Obviously, in this kind of design, the designers focus on and encourage the attacker.

In Super Smash Bros, the designers show us a alternative way to let the players who was beaten still have something to change the bad situation and add more strategy and fun in the battle. When the character is beaten, they will be thrown on the air, but the players can control themselves to moving themselves to change their track of up throwing and try to back to the battle stage. This idea lets the both side of players need to pay attention to the changeable situation and various strategy.
Another example is the Bomberman was showing on the London EXG when I visit there. I saw there were four players playing the 2vs2 game at that moment and two of them have already failed but they can control their characters moving around at the edge of the battlefield, to add new bombs on the main field to help or disservice their partner. By the way, even a new bombs add to the field, the bomb will hold a few seconds for the player running on the filed to avoid the explosion. This still follows the rules that let the player have a chance to practice a reasonable change.

A player who falls behind should have opportunities to catch up or help their team members. There are players, they have the authority to play.
